Are you looking after yourself?
In the hectic world of today, people are always searching for more ways of keeping feet and healthy.  Susan Jones has been looking into some of the ways of looking good and feeling good.
Running is excellent exercise. Before you start running, you should warm up first, using slow movements that make all your muscles work. But be careful! If you stretch when your muscles are cold, you might do yourself an injury. Always wear comfortable clothing and make sure your trainers are in good shape. If you wear shoes that give good support to your whole foot, you will pull less pressure on your knees. You should start exercising slowly, at a pace you can keep up for about 15-20 minutes. Try to exercise on soft ground as this will protect your knees and hips from too much stress.
It’s ok if you go to bed late occasionally but if you regularly cut down on your sleep, it will soon start to have bad effect on your skin. If you get a good night’s rest it will do your appearance the world of good. It is not called beauty sleep for nothing! Lack of sleep can cause acne or dry skin. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep by going to bed and getting up at regular times: don’t burn the candle at both ends. During the day, keep active: if you don’t get enough exercise, you may end up sleepless all night.
Did you know that standing, sitting and walking badly can make you look heavier then you really are? If we watch the way we sat and stood, it would improve our appearance a great deal. Stand in front of the mirror with your feet apart and your legs straight. Pull in your tummy, check that your ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles are in line with each other. You should be feeling and looking better already!
Most of us live in large polluted cities. If we got more fresh air, we would look healthier and more attractive. A brisk walk is one of the best things you can do for your circulation and appearance. Walking slowly is useful but a quick pace gets more oxygen into your lungs. So don’t just go for a pleasant stroll, try and find an area that doesn’t have much pollution, and get moving!
Many young people feel guilty about eating too much chocolate, and some even say they are addicted to it, though there is no evidence to support this. Chocolate does contain a lot of fat, and therefore any addicts out there would do better to eat less. However, if your diet is balanced, you needn’t feel guilty: eating chocolate in moderation is fine – but don’t eat it instead of proper meal.

  Miracle Oil

Did you know that there is a fruit juice that you can cook with, wash with and preserve things with? Well, there is. It has been used for thousands of years in countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain. What is it? It is olive oil, of course, and it is fast becoming the most popular oil in the world.
Although people in Mediterranean countries have been using olive oil for over 4000 years, it has only recently become popular in other parts of the world. In fact, people beyond the Mediterranean once saw olive oil as little more than an exotic but expensive luxury. However, recent studies linking an olive-rich diet with low rates of heart disease have made the rest of the world sit up and take notice. As a result, more and more people have come to realize the many health and nutritional benefits of giving up other oils and using olive oil instead.
As well as tasting delicious and being the healthiest cooking oil available, olive oil has many other uses. It is a major ingredient in many cosmetics, hair conditioners and soaps. It also has a wide variety of lesser known uses, such as fixing squeaky doors and even polishing diamonds. It is also a preservative, and will keep fish and cheese fresh for years.
Perhaps more important, though, is olive oil’s value as a medicine. Not only can eating olive oil lower the risk of serious diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, it can also have a healing effect on many stomach disorders. On top of this, Mediterranean people have traditionally used it to treat minor wounds and illnesses. This could explain why people in Mediterranean countries tend to live longer.
So the next time you go shopping, do not forget to add olive oil to your list. It will make your food taste better and your life last longer!

1) Nowadays, teenagers aren’t usually physically fit
2) There are two types of plastic surgery.
3) Teenagers don’t usually obey their parents when decide to change the way they look.
4) A lot of teenagers think plastic surgery will solve all their problems.
5) Statistics on the accidents in plastic surgery for teenagers is shocking.
6) Teenagers should turn their attention to their development and understanding their identity.

Presenter: With us in the studio today is Dr Edmond Hunt, a very experienced plastic surgeon. He is here to speak about teenagers and plastic surgery. Dr Hunt, welcome to the programme.
Doctor: Thank you. Plastic surgery is becoming more and more popular nowadays and many young people are using it to change the way they look. Of course, body image and physical appearance have always been important to teenagers, but now it seems we live in a society where even more importance is placed on being beautiful ― in the media, in advertising for example – which does nothing to help teenagers, many of whom already have a very poor body image.
Now, I would like to make a distinction between the two types of plastic surgery and I think we need to be clear about this. First, there’s what we call ‘reconstructive’ surgery which is done to correct defects on the face and body. Examples of this include physical birth defects and injuries like dog bites or burns. This kind of surgery repairs parts of the body.
The other type of plastic surgery is called ‘cosmetic’. This kind of surgery involves changing a part of the body simply because a person isn’t completely satisfied with it, for example nose jobs or liposuction (the removal of fat from the body.) Of course, the well-being of our patients is always our most important concern. There is some concern that the glamorous image of cosmetic surgery as seen on TV can encourage people to change themselves without reason. Teenagers may suffer from low self-esteem and
choosing plastic surgery is not always the answer to their problems. Often talking to a therapist, dieting and exercise are the solution, for example. We must judge each case individually and help people make the right decision. We must also make sure that the individual has finished growing and is mature enough emotionally to cope with the stress of the operation.
All potential patients go through a series of interviews and those under the age of eighteen need a parent’s signature. It is essential that we talk to parents as cost is also a main factor. If the patient is suitable, we then help to find a suitable surgeon to perform the operation. He or she must find a certified surgeon, that is to say, one who is qualified to perform the operation well.  After all, these operations are expensive and there is some risk involved.
Another word of warning, if I may. No amount of money can buy you happiness. The most expensive cosmetic surgery does not have the power to change who you are inside. A common myth is that we can make people like us more by changing our appearance. Our teenage years are a time of development, of personal discovery. It takes time to understand who you are. Remember, people cannot and should not judge you on your looks alone. If they do, they are not worth knowing. Some would say, on the other hand, that today we have the power to make ourselves happier with our appearance and we should take that opportunity if we can. Ultimately, the decision to have plastic surgery is a personal choice. If you have any concerns, speak to your parents, or your doctor. One thing is certain – you should think carefully before you decide.

On 25 October, 1881 a little boy was born in Malaga, Spain. It was a difficult birth and to help him breathe, cigar smoke was blown into his nose! But despite being the youngest ever smoker, this baby grew up to be one of the 20th century's greatest painters — Pablo Picasso.
Picasso showed his truly exceptional talent from a very young age. His first word was lapiz (Spanish for pencil) and he learned to draw before he could talk. He was the only son in the family and very good-looking, 1____________.  He hated school and often refused to go unless his do ting parents allowed him to take one of his father's pet pigeons with him!
Apart from pigeons, his great love was art, and when in 1891 his father, who was an amateur artist, got a job as a drawing teacher at a college, Pablo went with him to the college. He often watched his father paint and sometimes was allowed to help. One evening his father was painting a picture of their pigeons 2_______________. He returned to find that Pablo had completed the picture, and it was so amazingly beautiful and lifelike that he gave his son his own palette and brushes and never painted again. Pablo was just 13.
From then onwards there was no stopping him. Many people realized that he was a genius but he disappointed those 3________________. He was always breaking the rules of artistic tradition and shocked the public with his strange and powerful pictures.  He is probably best known  for his  'Cubist'  pictures,  4___________________.   His paintings of people were often made up of triangles and squares with their features in the wrong place. His work changed our ideas about art 5_____________. Guernica, which he painted in 1937, records the bombing of that little Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, and is undisputedly one of the masterpieces of modern painting.
Picasso died of heart failure during an attack of influenza in 1973. The artist created over 6,000 paintings, drawings and sculptures. Today a 'Picasso' costs several million pounds, 6  ____________.

B. so he was thoroughly spoilt.
C. which is not surprising.
D. that is why he was very hard-working.
E.  when he had to leave the room.

1. Computers have already revolutionized the way we live and work. But it is early days for computers. We do not know how much they are still changing the world. Already, Internet users can buy things and study holiday offers. It's much easier to edit and print documents using a PC. More computer wonders are yet to come.
2. Only a few years before men were walking on the moon, reputable scientists declared that it was impossible. But in 1969 Neil Armstrong stepped out of his space capsule and made his famous statement, That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.' However, progress in this area is slower now. Not as much money goes into research as in the 1960s.
3. Surely nothing has done more for the comfort and happiness of mankind than the advance of medical knowledge! Lots of people have benefited from the aspirin and lots of lives have been saved by penicillin. Surgeons can perform the most amazing operations. Average life expectancy in Europe has risen dramatically over the last hundred years.
4. In the past, a holiday used to mean simply a day when you did not work. Now millions of holidaymakers travel to all parts of the world. Perhaps, not all people like to see lots of tourists in their countries, but we must admit that a phenomenon which sees the population of Greece treble is a wonder of the world.
5. It is true that the Olympic Games are now commercialized and there is greed and drug abuse. However, it is a competition in which every country of the world takes part. Every four years, for a brief moment, we see these countries come together in peace and friendship. We see people from warring countries shake hands. We feel hope again for the future of mankind.
6. In 1724, Jonathan Swift wrote, 'Whoever makes two blades of grass or two ears of corn grow where only one grew before serves mankind better than the whole race of politicians.' In Europe farmers have done it and we produce enough food to feed the world. If only politicians could find a way to share it with those parts of the world where there is still famine.
7. The greatest wonder of the modern world is simply that we are still here. We have bombs that could destroy the world but we try our best not to use them. Because of people's effort no government dares to use such weapons. The year 2001 marked the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize, the most famous attempt to raise awareness of the issues of war and peace.

Reading is a modern, prosperous town on the south bank of the River Thames. Guarding the western approaches to London, it has always been important. It
was a stopping-off point for kings and queens and once it was home to one of the country’s richest abbeys. Today almost nothing is left of the old town except the remains of the abbey. There is a flourishing arts scene in the town, with both the Reading Film Theatre and the Hexagon Theatre. Reading is also famous for its big summertime festivals. The first, the Folk Poetry Festival, lasts five days. The three-day World Music, Arts and Dance Festival was originally inspired by Peter Gabriel. Held a little later in the summer the Reading Festival is a three-day event featuring many of the big names of contemporary music. Details of who is performing are published in the music press at least a couple of months in advance and tickets are available from record shops across the country. If you are planning on being in Reading for any of the festivals be sure to reserve a room months in advance.

Gloucester has played an important role in the history of England. Commercial prestige came to town with trade up the River Severn, which developed into one
of the busiest trade routes in Europe. However, navigating the Severn was so difficult that most trade gradually moved to the south. To help the city, a canal
was opened in 1827, but it didn’t improve the situation. Today, the canal is busy once again, though this time with pleasure boats. It has become a great new tourist attraction. Gloucester’s most prominent sight is the cathedral, its tower visible for miles around. The impressive buildings around the cathedral include the Beatrix Potter Exhibition in the house used by the children’s author for her illustrations of the story of the “Tailor of Gloucester”
